at liberty to get lost

September 6, 2006

just found a very good manifesto for liberalism in Lee Gregory’s blog:

“A society which takes freedom seriously is one in which every young person can ask themselves seriously: ‘what do I want to do with my life?'” (from The Stakeholder Society by Ackerman and Alstott (1999))

I’d add to that that a liberal society is one in which people lose themselves in a confusing multitude of opportunities, rather than alienating themselves in the security of a lifetime job.
