Tommy’s end

October 3, 2006

Last week I went along to the launch of Tommy Sheridan’s Solidarity in Edinburgh: I left not only disappointed, but upset. One of the speakers was nothing less than a Libanese woman defending Hezbollah and celebrating Nasrallah. Yes, a woman celebrating her own denial. What do I complain? I went along to a socialist event, I should have expected some anti-Israel sentiment. And still part of me does not see the connection: oh yes, I see the anti-imperialism. Oh yes, I see the anti-capitalism. Oh yes, I see the anti-americanism and antisemitism; and yes, I admit that all these are either historically and teoretically coherent views for the left. And still I think of the kibbutz, and I fail to understand how we came such a long way. I think of the cultural revolution in Iran, and I fail to understand how that woman could stand up, and speak up for Nasrallah.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to speak about this, but then today I read that Sheridan, in his latest attempt to defend himself from News of the World, has blamed the MI5 for producing a fake tape in which he confesses to visiting a sex club. Now, I was glad Sheridan had defeated News of the World. But when I add up blaming MI5 and inviting a pro-Nasrallah woman, I can’t help concluding that Tommy is over.

    Fear, I suggest.

That, and Churchill’s famous dictum, which only works if one assumes that self-interest must be unenlightened (and which I’m about to misquote) that “A man under 30 who is not a liberal has no heart. A man over 30 who is not a conservative, has no brain.”

    hello not like those people,

it would be weird if it were fear, because you would expect fear to play against Hezbollah, at least in the wider world, rather than for them.

Churchill, you are right, explains why that meeting was so depressing
